5 Ways You Can Support Newark Youth Without Writing a Check

We love donors. We truly do. But we also know that not everyone is in a position to give financially right now — and that’s okay. Because money is not the only thing Newark’s youth need.

They need time. They need presence. They need people who show up consistently and prove that someone outside their immediate circle actually cares. If that’s you — here are five real, meaningful ways to make a difference without spending a dime.

01  |  Volunteer Your Skills

You have something a young person in Newark needs. Maybe it’s music. Maybe it’s graphic design, social media, video editing, public speaking, or knowing how to put together a resume. Whatever you’re good at — there is a young person at HittMobb who would benefit from learning it.

We are always looking for people to lead workshops, sit in on sessions, or simply share their story and experience with our youth. You don’t need a degree or a certification. You just need to know something worth passing on — and the willingness to show up.

➡  Email us at help@hittmobb.org to find out how your skill set fits in.

02  |  Become a Mentor

Research consistently shows that one stable, caring adult in a young person’s life can completely change their outcome. Not a program. Not a policy. A person. Someone who calls to check in, shows up to their open mic, and tells them the truth when they need to hear it.

Mentorship at HittMobb doesn’t require a huge time commitment. It requires consistency. Even an hour a week can make a lasting impact on a young person who has never had someone in their corner before.

03  |  Donate Equipment or Supplies

You don’t need to write a check — but you might have something sitting in your basement or closet that could change a kid’s life. A keyboard you never play. A laptop collecting dust. A set of headphones you replaced last year. That equipment is exactly what our youth need to take their craft seriously.

Our current wishlist includes:

  • Musical instruments — keyboards, guitars, drum pads, microphones
  • Audio equipment — headphones, audio interfaces, studio monitors
  • Laptops and tablets for music production
  • Art supplies — canvases, sketchbooks, paint, markers
  • Camera and video equipment for youth media projects

04  |  Spread the Word

This one costs nothing and takes less than two minutes — but it matters more than most people realize. When you share HittMobb on your social media, forward our newsletter, or just tell a friend about what we’re doing, you are putting us in front of people who might become our next donor, volunteer, partner, or board member.

Word of mouth built this organization. It’s what keeps us growing. The next person who hears about HittMobb from you might be the one who funds our next program or mentors the next kid who needed exactly that person at exactly that moment.

05  |  Show Up to Our Events

When a young person performs at an open mic or presents a project they worked on for weeks, the size of the room matters to them. Your presence tells them their work is worth showing up for. It fills the seats, builds the energy, and lets our youth know that the community is paying attention.

Bring your family. Bring your coworkers. Bring your neighbors. Every person in that room sends a message to a young person on that stage — and that message is: we see you, we hear you, and we came out for you.

Change doesn’t always come with a receipt. Sometimes it comes in the form of a person who decided to show up — for a kid who never expected anyone to.

HittMobb is built on people like that. And we’re always looking for more.
